I remember hearing a presentation by BuzzFeed's viral editor in 2009 on their approach to content as - mullet style - business in the front and party in the back. The site overall has a winning formula with its approach to content, community, aggregation and now it's adding content creation/breaking news to the mix.

It's hard to believe it has been four years since I covered the last Iowa Caucus online. 

Data visualizations, real-time updates via social media continue make for game-changing coverage of the First-In-The-Nation caucus event this time around. 

Real-time data maps of precinct results combined with social media updates offer great depth at a glance of where the results are in the night. 

Taking a quick cruise around some news sites -- The Des Moines Register's map, candidates and by-county results display is a great breakdown of data at a glance. The website for CBS affiliate KCCI.com (where I used to work) has a smart real-time LiveWire page that converges Facebook status updates, livestreaming video and auto-updating precinct results in one place. (Kind of a combination of Storify meets Cover It Live).

The New York Times has a great map display of county leaders and size of lead, a list of caucus results data list and Twitter updates of the race.

MSNBC.com's BreakingNews site has a hover-over map display of results by county and in list form.

Let's not forget curation. The Breaking News Iowa Caucus section has a good mix of updates posted from Twitter, YouTube and other sources.

Storyful has a nice roundup of updates throughout the day of photos of sample ballots, precincts and Twitpics, tweets and more.

Great roundups of real-time updates on Storify by PBS Newshour, and the Des Moines Register.

Reach your audience where they already are. I’ve been saying this for the last several years and not just in relation to Facebook, but for content distribution as a whole – widgets, ugc, email newsletters, etc.

I was saying this well before I wrote the Facebook Guide for Journalists for Mashable, consulted for the New York Times Regional Media Group on social and emerging media, and spoke about the topic at a workshop at TCU’s Schieffer School of Journalism last year.

The question is not why news orgs should be on X, Y or Z platform. The question is, what is the value-add when I like a news org’s, columnist’s or reporter’s page? In other words, what does the audience get out of it?

Media companies need to tell their audience why they need to check out their Facebook pages, or whatever the platform is, not the other way around (i.e. Why XYZ newspaper should be on Facebook).

Examples of value-add:
Is the news org tapping into the stream of photos or status updates being posted to the public profile page during severe weather, wildfires or other breaking news? Engage with your fans, followers, etc. on that platform. Then curate, vet and showcase that content on your legacy media site (via Storify or other tools).

Does your news org put Facebook-only content on the public profile page, like Rockville Central or the New Yorker? Or even a TV station posting an anchor's video standup of what reporters are working on for the upcoming newscast is an example.

Does your news org/columnist/reporter's Facebook page post firsthand reportage there, which won’t necessarily go into a newspaper story, website story or video package?

Does your Facebook page close the loop with Facebook fans or Twitter followers, etc? Don’t always be asking for things from the fans. See what they’re posting and use comments/content shared as part of the storytelling. Then share the story back with the responders by posting it to the wall or on Twitter.

What will the audience get out of the news org’s/columnist’s/reporter’s Facebook page, Twitter account, etc. once they are there – that is what  should be addressed and asked, not why media orgs should be on these social media and emerging media platforms in the first place.

These questions aren’t new and doing things to promote engagement is nothing new, either.
